News SOCIETY WATCH following for you : The Board Chairman of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), Engineer Sola Olofin, has emphasized the need to protect workers’ rights and create safer working conditions across the country as well as ensuring that NSITF works for Nigerian Workers
Speaking in Abuja during the inauguration of the Governing Board of NSITF, Hon. Olofin reaffirmed the Fund’s commitment to providing compensation for insured employees who suffer work-related injuries, disabilities, diseases, or death.
He stressed that ensuring social protection for Nigerian workers aligns with Section 17 (3)(c) of the 1999 Constitution, which mandates the government to provide adequate welfare for all employees.
Olofin also highlighted the importance of the Employees’ Compensation Act (ECA) 2010, which established the Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS) under NSITF. According to him, this legislation reinforces the board’s dedication to safeguarding the welfare and dignity of Nigerian workers.
Recognizing workers as the backbone of the economy, the chairman underscored the necessity of prioritizing their welfare to drive sustainable national development.
However, he noted that many employers in Nigeria have yet to comply fully with the ECA, which mandates all employers to remit contributions to the Fund. He stressed the need for collaboration with labor unions, regulatory agencies, and the private sector to expand compliance and ensure that all eligible workers are covered under the scheme.
To enhance efficiency, Olofin pledged to work closely with the NSITF’s Managing Director and Executive Directors to adopt digital solutions that will improve accessibility, streamline operations, and ensure swift and fair processing of compensation claims.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to accountability and transparency, vowing to reposition the Fund for better performance.
“This mandate is not just a legal obligation; it is a moral imperative. It is the foundation upon which a just and equitable labor environment is built.
“As I assume office, I want to make it clear that my vision for the NSITF is one of transparency, efficiency, and accountability. We must reposition the Fund as a globally recognized social security institution that is trusted by employers, employees, and the general public,” he said.
“To achieve this, we must focus on key strategic areas: Strengthening Compliance and Coverage.”
Olofin expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the opportunity to serve, promising to lead with integrity, fairness, and an unwavering commitment to social justice for Nigerian workers.
