News SOCIETY WATCH following for you ; Some argue that it is due to hunger, but I strongly believe the root cause is greed. The insatiable desire to acquire wealth—often for frivolous and ostentatious displays—has eroded our values. The political class flaunts stolen riches, while young billionaires with questionable sources of income oppress others with their extravagant lifestyles. This has created a toxic culture where people chase wealth they don’t even need.
Social media has only fueled this madness. Every day, we are bombarded with news of Burna Boy, Wizkid, or Davido acquiring cars worth millions of dollars. Bloggers exaggerate these figures to stir unnecessary competition, further deepening the greed-driven rat race.
But at what cost? Kidnappings, ritual killings, cyber fraud, and other social vices have become rampant, all in the name of quick wealth. This is not the Nigeria we once knew—a society built on values, kindness, and community.
To combat this moral decay, the National Security Adviser (NSA) should collaborate with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to launch an aggressive sensitization campaign. We must reawaken our collective conscience and push back against the glorification of ill-gotten wealth.
May the Almighty cleanse our society, but we, too, must play our part in restoring the humanity we once had. After all, heaven helps those who help themselves.
